Dear Community Psychology Friends:

Welcome to history in the making!  This is the CP Topical Interest Group's (TIG) first full year and its inaugural year of presenting an AEA annual conference program.  We have a tremendous opportunity to begin determining what we want to be "when we grow up," but certainly, enjoying the "growing - up" process along the way through your participation and collaboration.  How can you make history?

First, we cordially invite you to submit a presentation proposal (s) for this year's American Evaluation Association (AEA) annual conference, to be held October 24th through October 27th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Please be aware that the proposal submission deadline is Midnight (EST), Friday, March 16, 2012.  Proposal submission information can be found at the following link:  We are encouraging proposals that will contribute to an understanding of how the values of community psychology relate to the field of evaluation and how the methods, practice, theory, and research on evaluation enhance the field of community psychology.  We believe this year's conference theme - Evaluation in Complex Ecologies: Relationships, Responsibilities, and Relevance - is particularly well-suited to community psychologists, specifically in regards to Ecological Frameworks; the assets/strength - based approach; person - environment fit; issues of diversity and context; social justice; and value - driven evaluation methods.  Proposals focusing on the conference theme or exploring any aspect of the breadth and depth of the field of evaluation from a community psychology perspective are most welcome.  In addition, we are very interested in proposals from evaluators who work, or have worked in other countries or in unusual contexts.  Regardless of the format you choose, we highly recommend presentations that represent your best work and provide an opportunity for participants to interact and collaborate.

Second, we ask you to consider serving as a reviewer of conference proposals submitted to the CP Topical Interest Group (TIG).  This is a great way to find out about the cutting edge evaluation work being done by community psychologists or from a community psychology perspective.  You can volunteer right on the conference proposal submission forms or by writing our program co - chairs Rachel Becker - Klein and Jim Salt (contact information follows) before March 26, 2012.

Finally, last year's TIG leadership drafted a Mission/Values/Goals statement which we shared at our 2011 conference business meeting.  Subsequently, we revised the statement (see attached) based on member feedback.  Reflecting the values of community psychology, we now encourage your comments on this statement.  This, we believe, is a "living document" that will evolve as our TIG evolves.  At the present, we hope that it will set in motion a fruitful discussion that will move us forward.

That said, if you have any questions about conference proposal submissions please don't hesitate to contact one of our program co-chairs: Rachel Becker - Klein ( or Jim Salt (  If you have comments on our Mission/Values/Goals statement, please contact one of our co - chairs: Jeff Sheldon ( or Theresa Armstead (

We look forward to a great first year of putting our mission, values, and goals into practice, and to seeing you in Minneapolis!
