The Division of Social Sciences [] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Global and Community Health scholar with expertise in health and health data, including data-analysis and/or geo-visualization as they relate to societal injustices embodied in ill-health. The position is open to any field in the Social Sciences at the Assistant Professor level. The selected candidate will hold a professorial appointment in one of the departments in UCSC’s Division of Social Sciences (see below), and also contribute towards the Global Community Health (GCH) program.

The selected candidate will be an outstanding researcher on issues such as big data for analyzing health inequalities, translational genomics care and data-sharing for underserved communities, measuring and visualizing constraints on health systems, impact evaluation for health care interventions and policy making, and the delivery of primary health care across global, national, and subnational/local scales. The selected candidate will also possess very strong collaborative and organizational skills based on experiences working with diverse communities through partnerships on issues of health service access and disparities.

Other areas of expertise of interest to us include: statistical analysis for identifying gaps in health services, staffing and facilities in deprived communities and countries; comparative approaches to contextualizing evidence-based health policy; socio-economic and political factors that explain health policies and inequities in access; biomedical innovation and measures of access to medicines; the mapping of global and community health security as it relates to food systems, pandemic threats, and/or climate crises. Our interests align with the emerging framework of “critical global health” that calls for research attentive to power dynamics and inequality, and in which scholars are accountable to the communities they study.

Applicants should have expertise in global and community health research, demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring GCH majors/minors and other undergraduates, guide students on appropriate GCH applications, and develop GCH’s community partnerships. We are conducting another separate search focused on health justice and qualitative research at the same time with a similar timeline for application and assessment.
In both searches, consideration of potential contributions to the interdisciplinary GCH programming and to diversity, equity, and inclusion will be of paramount importance.

The selected candidate will hold a 100 percent teaching and research appointment in a department in the Division of Social Sciences and will be expected to teach courses in support of GCH’s goals and contribute to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students. The normal teaching load in the division is four courses over three quarters.

The Division of Social Sciences includes eight departments: Anthropology, Economics, Education, Environmental Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, Politics, Psychology, and Sociology. It confers the most undergraduate degrees on campus, and each department has a Ph.D. program. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) and demonstrated record of research and teaching experience (demonstrated by college level teaching experience, TA experience, research presentations and/or professional training seminars). Degree requirements expected to be completed by June 30, 2020
