Located in the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives within the Office of the Director, ODP’s mission is to improve the public health by increasing the scope, quality, dissemination, and impact of prevention research supported by the NIH.  The ODP Strategic Plan outlines a variety of activities designed to address the mission of the office. These activities represent a significant increase in the breadth and depth of the work of the office. 

The incumbent will utilize his/her scientific and program development expertise to lead the implementation of key components of the strategic plan.  For example, the incumbent will identify and design research initiatives in disease prevention, strengthen existing partnerships and build new ones, and develop creative strategies for advancing disease prevention in a variety of research areas.  The ideal candidate would have extensive knowledge of the prevention research community both inside and outside of the NIH and be able to leverage this network to promote collaborative research and outreach programs.

An individual with the expertise described above would enjoy a scientifically stimulating and collegial environment and have ample opportunities to:

  • Develop and implement activities designed to assist with ongoing strategic planning, including development of portfolio analysis tools, promoting the use of the best available methods in prevention research, assessment of current activities, knowledge gaps, criteria for setting program priorities, partnership development, and future strategies relating to disease prevention;
  • Plan, initiate, monitor, and conduct analyses necessary to provide a rational basis for key policy and program decisions related to disease prevention methodology and research within ODP and at the NIH; 
  • Conduct literature reviews to examine the current state of prevention research and prepare reports summarizing and synthesizing the body of work;
  • Prepare, present, and disseminate information about advances in promising new approaches and developments in disease prevention; and
  • Arrange seminars and workshops to assess the current state-of-the science of disease prevention and facilitate collaborative efforts with NIH Institutes and Centers, and other governmental and non-governmental agencies. 


The position is being announced as a GS-685-12/13 Public Health Analyst.  Ideal candidates may have a MPH, Ph.D. or equivalent degree with experience in the design and analytic methods used in disease prevention research.  Experience with the development of partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and the coordination of funding opportunity announcements is desirable.  Candidates with strong writing, communication and interpersonal skills are sought.

The work site location is the Washington, D.C. suburb of Rockville, Maryland. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and excellent benefits will be provided.
